Happy birthday, Mom!

In other news, I've added a CD for $ale page that contains all the current commercial recordings of my work. More are in the works, so stay tuned.

Also, Carnival-Daring Do has been accepted to Moondance next month. We are one of ten animations, which is really cool. I'll be heading there so if you are in/around Boulder, CO, please let me know!

Oh, I also fixed those broken links on the Links page. You probably didn't even notice they were broken, but they were...

Things are moving forward. Carnival Daring-Do now has its own website (in progress). And it is being screened tonight (!) as part of the XMV series at Collective: Unconscious. $7 admission gets you all that and more!

Just to keep you all up to speed, Carnival Daring-Do has been an official selection of the Palm Beach, Fresno Filmworks, Athens International, and Tallahassee Film festivals.  We also received "recognition" at this year's Bourge festival in the multimedia category. If you are in/near Tribeca tonight, and you are looking for trippy surrealism other than Sex in the City, stop by. I'd be there, but I'm going dancing with my wife to celebrate our wedding anniversary.

Okay, so I didn't update anything in April. Or May. You'd think I wasn't doing anything. I've been doing stuff, I've just been forgetting to post about it here.

Let me make it all up to you. I've finished a quartet for flute, vibraphone, violin, and cello called Goodnight, nobody. It is a pretty cool piece if I do say so myself. In other news, turns out that little video that I keep going on and on about, Carnival Daring-Do, earned recognition at this year's Bourge festival. Check it out (scroll all the way down to the bottom).

The Bourge festival is a huge thing. Really, really huge. Real composers get awards from that festival, not chumps like me. Or so I thought...

Well, you can add the Athens International Film Festival to the list of venues screening Carnival Daring-Do. Also, we are in the final round of judging for the London International Film Festival. The Athens in question is in Ohio, but the London is the one in the United Kingdom.

March is a busy month and things are moving forward. I had my recital last week and I'll get some audio up early next week. I'm also going to revamp the site, so don't be frightened when you come back.

Big news, Carnival Daring-Do, the video collaboration I did with Carla Poindexter, is getting picked up by film festivals. We are getting shown at the Palm Beach International Film Festival, the Tallahassee Film Festival, and the Fresno Film Festival. We also are in the final round at the High Falls Film Festival. Interesting letter from High Falls. Towards the end, they cited some of their concerns, including:

"There was an interesting split among our viewers. Some complained that the sound was unpleasant, harsh, and annoying. Others liked the music and sound effects and felt that both fit the film well."

This is not the first time that my music has been a polarizing factor among judges. I enjoy when this happens since I think that it communicates a certain amount of success on my part. I created something that made people react and then discuss. What else could an artist want?

I'm going to Louisiana (for to see my Suzi-anna) for the CMS SuperRegional Conference tomorrow afternoon. I'm presenting my podcasting paper, chairing a session on Schoenberg, serving on a panel on job preparation, and having a piece performed. They will be SO sick of my at LSU. I probably won't be allowed back in the state for the rest of the decade.

In up and coming news, the performance of my Concerto for Timpani by the illustrious University of Kentucky Percussion Ensemble is set for March 6. I'd love to be there, but unfortunately I can't. My faculty recital is March 4 and we have family coming in for the whole week. As it turns out, my piece has some pretty heavy company. Lou Harrison, Paul Lansky, and Kyle Gann are also on the concert, just to name a few. I really wish I could be there.

It is kind of funny. The piece has been performed a lot lately and I've only ever heard the premiere at KU in 2003. The performance at LSU on Friday night will be the second time I've heard the piece live.

On a beer update, I still have some. I've been saving it for when my company arrives this weekend. After March 4, though, it will be gone. Even if I have to send the Earth into fiery ruin (which I doubt). I'm looking at recipes for my next batch. Any suggestions?

I've decided to share. There is a new page on the site containing the theme and all my sources used in my current podcast project: Mancala Variations. Please check them out, do something neat with them, and send that neat thing back to me. I'll put all these things together on my podcast to celebrate my upcoming anniversary.

The reviews are in on my "Mocha Stout."

Jay,
I finally tried the Mocha Stout tonight and it was amazing. It reminds me of a stout I loved at a local brew-pub/restaurant in Bloomington; Lenny's.
Thank you so much for sharing!!
Have a great weekend.
Jeremy

The stout is, quite possibly, the best beer I've ever made. I was really worried about brewing beer in Florida without my trusty beer fridge (moment of silence) but everything seems to have turned out well. It truly is a great beer, if you don't mind me saying so. I think I'll go have one...

Here is a quick update to my 2008 itinerary (because I knew you were curious):
February: present my podcasting thing at the CMS SuperRegional Conference as LSU. I now know for whom to root in tonight's football game.
Sometime: Go to the University of Kentucky for a performance of my Concerto for Timpani. Did I mention that the piece won an award?

January 2, 2008
Well, I'm sure you are wondering what is up my sleeves for 2008. There are a couple of things out there on the horizons that will be happening this year and I figured I should let somebody know. Then I thought, Hey! Put that stuff on your website! People like stuff on websites!

Anyhow, here is a list of what is going down in 2008 (so far):

February: give my podcast presentation for a TI:ME Conference in Ohio, present my work at the University of Florida for their composition seminar
March: my faculty recital (my first recital of just my stuff in 12 years) and a performance of Throb by the Iktus Percussion Quartet in NYC

CDs: Pioneer X has been recorded for Beauport Classical Records and should be released in the first half of 2008. Bad Villager will also be included in the 2006-2007 CD set for Vox Novus 60x60 series. I'm also finishing up my Carnival Etudes CD made up of works inspired by my collaboration with Carla Poindexter.

So, 2 days into the new year and things are looking good. I'm hoping this is only the beginning...
